Q: Do we need to tithe to be blessed?
We have already been made joint heirs with Jesus (Romans 8:17). So, “Why, then, do we need to tithe to be blessed?”
Let’s make sure we’re clear on this: It’s because of what Jesus has done for us that we have a right to the blessings of God. It’s because of what He’s done that we don’t need to earn God’s approval. And we don’t tithe in order to do so.
We tithe as an act of worship to God, showing our gratitude for His provision in every area of life. That is what Abram was doing in the first example we find of tithing in the Bible (Genesis 14:20). Abram didn’t tithe to earn God’s approval (Galatians 3:6), but rather to thank and worship Him for His provision.
That is exactly what we do today. We tithe because we love God and are grateful for His provision. And according to the Word, the more we honor God, the more He empowers us to prosper (2 Corinthians 9:6-8).
In the end, we don’t give in order to gain God’s approval. Rather, we give because God has and continues to meet all of our needs. The exciting thing is that you can’t outgive God, and He will continue to bless the seeds we sow (2 Corinthians 9:6-11)!
