Based on Evangelist Samuel Murrombe’s Testimony
Born in Beira, Mozambique, Samuel Murrombe’s journey led him across borders—to Zimbabwe and then South Africa—settling in Alexandra township. But the path he walked there was far from God’s best. Known as one of the area’s most notorious gangsters, Samuel’s choices finally landed him behind bars.
What looked like a dead end was actually a divine appointment. When man said “guilty,” Heaven said “called.”
“For with God nothing shall be impossible.” (Luke 1:37)
A Divine Appointment Behind Prison Walls
In December 2000, God sent a preacher into that prison with the uncompromised Word of Faith. In a place marked by fear and brokenness, Samuel heard the gospel with fresh ears and an open heart. He surrendered his life completely to Jesus Christ—confessing Him as Lord—and the prison cell became holy ground (Romans 10:9–10).
That moment was his exodus—out of darkness and into the Kingdom of His dear Son (Colossians 1:13). And it was only the beginning.
A Booklet, a Prayer, and a Holy Spirit Encounter
Shortly after receiving salvation, another inmate handed Samuel a small booklet by Brother Kenneth Copeland: God’s Will Is the Holy Spirit. By divine provision, it had been translated into Tsonga—close to Samuel’s mother tongue—so he could understand every word.
He devoured its teachings:
- The baptism in the Holy Spirit is for every believer (Acts 2:38–39).
- The Holy Spirit is the Teacher and Helper (John 14:26).
- Praying in other tongues edifies and charges the believer’s inner man with supernatural power (Jude 1:20; 1 Corinthians 14:4).
That night, alone in his cell, Samuel prayed the prayer at the end of the booklet by faith:
“Lord Jesus, right now I come in faith, and I ask You to baptize me in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in other tongues.”
He believed he received (Mark 11:24).
The next morning, the evidence came.
“An Invisible Hand Came Upon Me”
During the daily one-hour prison prayer gathering—PUSH: Pray Until Something Happens—the men joined hands and began to pray. Suddenly, Samuel felt what he describes as an invisible hand resting upon him. He began to speak in other tongues with such power that every person holding his hands fell under the anointing.
“And I thought to myself, now I’ve committed another crime, because people were collapsing. I don’t know what was happening. And that was the turning point of my life and my ministry.”
From that moment, his prayer life ignited. Faith leaped. Expectation rose. He began to believe God for miracles, healings, and manifestations of the Spirit (Acts 1:8).
And God confirmed His Word.

Miracles in the Midst of Bars and Barbed Wire
Still in prison, Samuel began ministering to inmates, laying hands on the sick, and praying in the Spirit—just as he had learned through Brother Copeland’s teaching. Breakthrough after breakthrough followed. Men were healed. Bondages were broken. Even prison officers began requesting prayer.
The testimony spread like holy fire. God was on the move—because faith found a voice and the Holy Spirit had free course.
“This is the victory that overcomes the world—even our faith.” (1 John 5:4)
From Prisoner to Preacher—to the Nations
Today, Evangelist Samuel Murrombe serves as the International Crusade Director of In His Name Ministries. The same Spirit who touched him behind bars now uses him to reach multitudes across Africa. In mass gospel crusades in Ethiopia, gatherings of 50,000… 60,000… even 80,000 people assemble to hear the Word as he preaches Jesus with power (Acts 4:33; Romans 15:18–19).
Samuel remains deeply grateful for Brother Kenneth Copeland’s yes to Jesus, for the partnership that allowed that life-changing teaching to reach him in prison, and for the Holy Spirit who continues to lead him from glory to glory (2 Corinthians 3:18).
His life declares the gospel he now carries to the nations:
“Jesus Christ is Lord!”
FAITH TAKEAWAYS
- No prison can chain the Word. The anointing breaks every yoke (Isaiah 10:27; 2 Timothy 2:9).
- The Holy Spirit is God’s will for you. Receive Him by faith (Acts 2:38–39; Luke 11:13).
- Praying in tongues builds you up. It charges your spirit like a battery (Jude 1:20; 1 Corinthians 14:4).
- Your testimony is a weapon. We overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony (Revelation 12:11).
FAITH CONFESSION (Say it out loud)
“Father, I thank You that Jesus is Lord over my life. I receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit—power to live, power to witness, and power to overcome. I am not limited by my past, my environment, or my feelings. I am led by Your Spirit, strengthened in my inner man, and equipped to see miracles, signs, and wonders. From this day, I walk in boldness, obedience, and victory—in Jesus’ Name. Amen!”
PRAYER TO RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT
“Lord Jesus, You are my Savior and my Lord. I ask You now to baptize me in the Holy Spirit with the Bible evidence of speaking in other tongues. I receive by faith, right now. Holy Spirit, fill me to overflowing. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
Now open your mouth and begin to speak as the Spirit gives utterance (Acts 2:4). It’s yours—take it!
