We learn from 1 Corinthians 14:3 that prophecy is for strengthening, encouraging and comforting others. It will always line up with God’s Word. And we know what God has written in His Word is always His will.

That’s important, because the reason prophecy comes is to confirm or to turn a person around concerning God’s will. It comes because God has been talking to the person, and either he or she is not sure or has not been listening; therefore, the Spirit of God will speak through another person.

Let prophecy confirm what you’ve been hearing, or turn you toward God’s will. But don’t be led by prophecy! Proverbs 20:27 says, “The Lord’s light penetrates the human spirit, exposing every hidden motive.” The Spirit of God is dwelling in your spirit, and you can trust His leadership (1 John 2:27; John 16:13) when it comes to all the spiritual gifts.
