For many years, holidays have been celebrated by the world and Christians alike. We know that God is actually the One who instituted the concept of holidays because He instructed Israel to have feasts and celebrations in the Old Testament. As Christians, it is beneficial for us to take the time to celebrate and appreciate all the good things God has done for us.
Christmas and Easter, for example, are traditional holidays which most Christians observe. These holidays are not specifically mentioned in the Bible, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are wrong. As Christians we can choose to participate in these holidays as long as we don’t forget the real reason we celebrate, which is the wonderful birth of Jesus and the power of His resurrection!
Secular traditions and the commercialism encouraged by the media and merchants can cheapen the real meaning of why we celebrate. Without proper Bible teaching, this can be confusing to our children and draw us away from what is truly important. Therefore, it is vital for us to make sure our children and family members understand the true meaning of the holidays.
Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to participate in traditional holidays is up to each individual believer. We should never feel like we have to participate in certain traditions out of religious duty.
The Bible is very clear that we should avoid vain traditions and that we should not allow anyone to pressure us into fulfilling religious ceremonies if we do not feel led to participate. Colossians 2:16-17 says, “So don’t let anyone condemn you for what you eat or drink, or for not celebrating certain holy days or new moon ceremonies or Sabbaths. For these rules are only shadows of the reality yet to come. And Christ himself is that reality.”
We are confident that as you continue to seek the wisdom of God, He will clearly reveal to you whether or not celebrating specific holidays would be beneficial for you and your family.
