Second Corinthians 6:14 instructs us, “Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness?”

Unity and agreement are among the highest values for success in marriage, according to God’s Word. And starting married life with another person who shares your faith and commitment is the key. You shouldn’t have to guess or assume where another person stands on this. A person is born again of the Spirit if he or she believes in their heart that God raised Jesus from the dead and has confessed Jesus as Lord with their mouth (Romans 10:9-10).

Don’t move ahead unless you’re sure on this. If you are unsure in any way of your fiancé’s commitment to Jesus, then it is best to postpone your plans and pray. Be sensitive to listen and God will give you direction. Let His peace in your heart be the umpire and final deciding factor (Colossians 3:15). It can be quite challenging to be in a marriage with an unsaved or even uncommitted person. Your first commitment should be to God and His will!

In order for marriage to be successful, there must be mutual agreement on the Word of God. If you are contemplating marriage, we encourage you to begin studying the Word together and praying regularly before you get married. This will help to establish a good foundation for your married life. Then, the love you have for each other, combined with the love of God, will make your marriage union complete and successful.
